With over 423 members, Charlottenburg-based sports club SG Handicap e.V. plays an important role in enabling people with disabilities in Berlin to stay active. We were very happy to donate to such an important cause.
Originally founded in 1955 as a sports club for war veterans, it was soon realized that physical activity through sports helps to combat the stresses and strains of everyday life, especially in people with disabilities. Now, SG Handicap offers their 423 active members a wide range of group sports to take part in.
From Monday to Friday, over 30 volunteers offer courses at Charlottenburg's Peter-Ustinov school. Wheelchair basketball, “Bosseln” (a variation of Irish Road Bowling), soccer, soccer-tennis, specific activities for those with Parkinson’s, rehabilitative gymnastics, floorball, water gymnastics, swimming, and even cheerleading: there's something for everyone!
In 2000, SG Handicap started their own wheelchair basketball division and now host both a youth and adult team which perform quite successfully in Eastern Germany's league. It's a fast, dynamic sport that requires good body control and builds companionship through mutual fun. Wheelchair basketball at SG Handicap is very inclusive as men, women, and people of all abilities play together on the same team.
